Section 11: Audience Feedback

We surveyed teenagers (our main target audience) to see what they thought about the opening scene we made for our thriller. We did this by viewing the opening scene, and then recording the comments made by the audience. We then asked them certain questions to find out whether our thriller meet their needs and whether they would still be interested in watching it from what they saw in the opening scene.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE:
We asked our audience "How well did you understand what was happening in the scene?" and they said that they knew that the actor was running away, and that it wasn't in a linear sequence because there were flashbacks and that they could tell the difference between the present and the flashbacks due to the filters that we used, for example, we used a dark filter on the present, and a light, unrealistic lighting on the flashbacks.

THRILLER CODES AND CONVENTIONS:
We asked "Did the scene leave you asking questions?" and they replied with yes, because they wanted to know why the boy was leaving home, and what he was looking at which was pinned up on the fridge. Also, they said it left them hanging - not explaining anything and they'd watch the film to find out what happened.

CAMERAWORK:
We asked "How well was the camerawork?" and they said it was smooth, and they liked how it was set out, with showing flashbacks of what has happened so that they gather a deeper knowledge of what has happened earlier before the filming, and so that they know why the boy is running away.

MISE-EN-SCENE:
We asked "How well was the mise-en-scene, such as the setting, and the characters and objects around him?" and the audience said that the filters were good because they created an eerie feeling, and that the acting was good and realistic so that it made the opening scene even more realistic.

SOUND:
We asked the audience "How well did the music/sound fit what was being shown on the screen?". They said that the music was really good because it changed half way through, and was eerie, but then changed to action music, so that they are warned that something is happening on screen. They also said it fit well with that was happening, and also fit well with the editing.
